1 Jun 2007 The Lego city in use

The Lego city turned out to be somewhat awkward in performance. Upon getting to Trades Hall for tech run, we discovered that the city was better viewed if it was on an angle. Unfortunately, I hadn’t planned on that. Fortunately, I had a wedge-shaped set piece that was used previously from Sticky Ballerina Legs, my company’s first show. All it needed was a coat of paint, and some velcro on it to stick to the bottom of the city. Actually, it was extremely stable, and as you can see in the pics, the city stayed put. But it did mean that when the city (with its lid on) was onstage, as far downstage as possible, looming over the heads of the front row, it was a little oppressive.
We used a combination of dim blue light for the city scenes, and a ‘follow-spot’ - me in the front row, holding a small but powerful torch. And of course, the Christmas lights in the buildings light up.
And here’s a really bad shot of the burnt city in use. You can barely make out the big burnt tree in the middle, and the buildings. There’s a red ‘flame’ background, and we used a combination of the dim blue wash, haze, and two torches, to light it.
