20 Aug 2007 Chapter Four: The box
Read the previous post - explaining the city design - here.
I named the city as I built it. The box is the area on which the puppets sit; the playing area as it were. This consists of: a base plate (for the entire city set to sit on), three sides of black core flute (left, right and front), and two ‘floors’ - see next chapter for more about the floors.
There is no back to this box, because this is the area that needed to be used for access to rods and so forth. However, there is the ‘backdrop’, a piece of black core flute that is stuck to the back of the box (so now there is a left, right, and front side, and one very large back side), with a piece cut out to facilitate that all-important access under the box.
The base plate was attached last in order to add all the moveable parts etc with ease. Here you can see the box, with the bottom floor inserted. This photo was pretty much taken just to have a visual explanation of the city for the cast. The balsa block sits on the floor, representing the park statue.
