20 Aug 2007 Chapter Two: The boxed idea
Read the previous post - basics of the show - here.
As I said in the previous chapter, I was toying with the idea of the ‘pop-up book’ set; but how to make it? I could easily hinge everything, so that the puppets ‘rose’ out of the box once the lid is opened, but then you would see all the mechanisms in the back of the ‘lid’, which would double as the backdrop of the city…
So what to do? What to do?
Why not just remove the ‘pop-up’ bit, and have a backdrop that stays in one place. Of course, this meant that I had to figure out a way to hide the city during the show; so that the city could remain onstage, but not detract from the other puppets.
Answer? Build a lid that can be removed manually to reveal everything inside.
…Confused? Imagine that you have a cube. The ‘city’ set would comprise of the bottom side and the back side. The lid would comprise of the top, left and right sides.
