Live from UNIMA 2008: Day Three
Read yesterday’s post here. Follow with Flickr pics here.
Ok, I’m in a hurry to get to a show, and want an early night, so let’s see how fast I can write this. If not, I’ll finish when I get back…
For Nat: a picture of breakfast, which is pancakes and jam. Yummy!
Day Three: Panic over papier mache and Z is for Giraffe
Continuing the bunraku puppetry workshop with Nori today (read yesterday’s post here and keep up with pics of the day here), we finished making the handles for our puppet heads, as well as started papier macheing the moulds. However: Nori told us we’re doing a 5-day workshop in 3 and 1/2, and as such, we’re trying to hurry through as much as possible. Which means doing papier mache in half the time!
With the handle, we shaped it, readied and inserted the trigger, and then created a hole for the string that allows the head to be moved. This was done in the morning, as our moulds had not yet dried. I had pulled out the clay from the mould and it turned out nicely; a bit cracked off, but I soon fixed that with a little more plaster. (Do see the Flickr pics for more on the handle and the papier mache!)
At lunch, most of the class went off to find some lunch, and we bought something near the train station and sat down outside the WA Art Gallery. By the time we had finished eating, some street performers had appeared, and entranced us with lively dancing and antics. The first decided to wander off by himself and spook a pigeon; a small group managed to have an ‘argument’
with an onlooker because he was ‘interrupting’ a conversation; and another sat down near some lunching people. As a saxaphone busker appeared and started playing, some even danced. It was lots of fun, and I’m informed, was done by someone who is in contact with me via Theatre Australia - how great that I never knew, and coincidences never stop on this trip!
The afternoon was thus spent papier macheing as much as I could, and I’m very tired of it. It is relaxing in a way, because you don’t have to think much, but it’s also very tiring on the back and hands - and you get glue everywhere!
We finished at 6pm, and came straight back to the hotel. I write this as fast as possible so that I can leave in 15 min to see my first UNIMA 2008 festival show - Z is for Giraffe. It finishes early, so hopefully I can come back and write a review. If not, I’ll post the review tomorrow. UPDATE: Read the review here.
