2 Jul 2008 Thinking back...
So yay! I have an order to fill from my Shop!! Which is great, because I worry so much that I’m not doing enough advertising, etc.
Anyway, the other day I happened upon an Australian puppet ministry group, and it makes me wonder: is there really a puppetry ministry scene in this country? I don’t know, because I’m Jewish - and we really don’t present puppetry in our synagogues… or at least the ones I’ve been to.
Thinking back, it occured to me that I have been to a puppet ministry show. My friend Jeany one year invited me to see her perform in her church’s show. She’s a very experienced puppeteer and she took on the main organising role for the event. I can’t actually remember the show much now - it was several years ago - but it was an enjoyable new experience.
And a strange one. I’ve been in churches before, having been to a Methodist school for much of my education. So it’s not a new thing… what was new, was attending a very large church for Christian Koreans. It really does make you feel like the odd one out when the whole event takes place in a language you don’t know (I’m by no means fluent in Hebrew, but as I’m used to synagogues more than I am any other religious experience, well, you get the idea)…
I wish I could remember more about the actual performance. Anyway, it does make me wonder - just how much puppet ministry is in this country. It doesn’t seem to be promoted in the same way it is in the US.
In Taiwan, the traditional glove puppet shows can be seen at religious festivals, but they have nothing to do with teaching religion. The puppet shows are usually out-doors and considered entertainment for the gods (well, not quite like the Christian God, this is more like local deities and heroes from myths). And they are what they are: entertainment. There's no attempt to really teach anything, though there's usually the good trimphing over the evil theme.
Anyway, you're right, in that I think a lot of the 'puppet ministry' over east is more about entertainment than about preaching or teaching. At least, from what little I know about it :)
