Across oceans
I just have to do a big shout out to Jarrod and Sean - two people I met over a year ago. I was amazed at these young boys’ enthusiasm for theatre. Before leaving high school they self-produced their own show with their company Lazy Creations Group, and have since produced another. But what they’ve really been doing since graduation is fantastic.
Inspired by [tos], an off-Broadway show about … well, getting to Broadway, they have been making webisodes of their own, spoofing [tos] and many other well-known productions. They’ve not only made it their mission to go see the show in December (in New York mind you), but have managed to impress the very people who have created it in the first place. They’ve even chatted with Kris Stewart, arguably one of Australia’s and NY’s most important musical theatre producers.
I’m so happy to know that there are people in the ‘next’ generation of performing artists that are so damn committed to making it their own way. Sean is busy studying at Swinburne, to which I’m glad he’s enjoying (I went there); Jarrod is also studying, but is doing a teaching course.
I urge you to check out their videos, with their latest season here. They have some hilarious footage, and one video in particular which features a puppet I watched them build.
You can find Sean’s blog here, where he’s detailing the trip/show and raising money to get to NY.
I really hope they can afford to make it, but most importantly, I hope, as I said to them when I first met them, to see them perform in a comedy festival one day. (Or maybe some other well-known show, hey guys?
) They have a strange and wonderful grasp of the absurd, whilst still managing to make things logical.
But there’s a problem; these guys want to do a one-off show in NY while they’re there. I reckon that’s just crazy enough to be… well, crazy. But I want to help them do it, if only because it takes a lot of guts to do what they’re doing. The boys are asking for help from anyone in NY who can offer or find them a small venue (bar, rehearsal space, whatever), equipment, contacts, whatever. I know they would really appreciate anything given and I have no doubt you’d be eternally gifted with free tickets (ok, yeah, I really shouldn’t be making promises for them…
) or something of that sort. There’s just 21 days til Jarrod and Sean are in NY, so if you can help them, please do so. You can find more info at their latest blog post. I’ve already donated money to their trip, and if I could afford to fund their whole thing I would…
Anyway, that’s my plug for the day. And now I’m off to see the wizard
