12 Jan 2009 Insight into an elephant
Emmanual Bourgeau is one of the many people who worked on "The Sultan’s Elephant" (pictured on the post about animatronics), and despite his site being in French, it’s a good one to check out (… despite… obviously, I mean for those of us who don’t speak that particular language!). Bourgeau is a sculptor, working in wood, and his site has some great photos of behind the scenes of making the large animatronic elephant. It’s a wonderful example of what you can do with wood, and an excellent insight to how the puppet was built. In particular, you can see how the puppet was sculpted and see how it appeared before being dressed up in paints and fabrics. There’s an interesting shot of the jaw of the elephant, the bare ‘bones’ of the wood as it’s pieced together to form the shape of the elephant, and even a shot of the giant girl that accompanied the performance.
