31 Jul 2009 Too good not to share
So it was my mum’s birthday while I was on the plane back home, and I decided before I left to do something nice for her: you see, my family had also been away, but they got back before I did. This gave me plenty of opportunity to make a surprise present for her, and leave it so she’d find it when she got back.
But what to make? Well, I was buying her a finger puppet that she wanted from staceyrebecca, which was a corn. So I went with the food theme - I’d had in mind for ages on making a cupcake finger puppet to match my ice scream anyway. I had the ‘ingredients’, so all I had to do was put it together, leave it in a nicely wrapped box, and hope my mum liked it (she did/does).
And here we are:
Ok, so the puppet fit better on my thumb, but it’s a pretty good effort. I used those tiny plastic cupcake patties you can find at the supermarket; cut a hole at the bottom, then sewed a finger tube to it. I stuffed in some pillow stuffing around the finger tube, added a circular piece of brown fleece over the top and then sewed that to the patty (I quickly discovered that glue wouldn’t work). The icing is a piece of randomly shaped pink felt, and the sprinkles are individually sewn coloured beads.
There’s another really good pic here.
It was quite fun to make, except for the beading, which
was really fiddly… but all in all, a good little puppet. I was tempted to add a face to it, but when I tried, it just looked weird. So I left it as is.
The best part about this, of course, wasn’t what I made, but the whole idea of the surprise present. When I left for America, it was a nice feeling knowing that my mum would find it on returning and have something waiting for her after the long trip.
Anyway, I was tempted not to share this puppet with everyone, seeing as how it was a present, but it’s just so pretty I can’t help myself
