Puppets in Melbourne

What is UNIMA?

UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) is the international organisation of puppeteers, puppet makers, puppet writers, and puppet companies. They have branches all around the world, and membership with the organisation means that you can: be listed on your local branch’s website or publications; receive regular newsletters and puppetry updates; be informed of new shows in your country, as well as other opportunities; and be in touch with other local puppetry-minded people.

I am a member of the Australian branch, and though I have not participated much in the organisation’s activities, I can say that the small annual fee (less than $AUS 100 for companies, less than $AUS 50 for individuals; but don’t quote me) is well worth it. I have been kept up-to-date of grants and funding opportunities, puppetry events around the world, informed of performances to see, as well as had ample opportunities for meet and greets with other puppeteers.

Furthermore, UNIMA runs national and international events, such as the biennial conferences held in different places around the world each time. The next last one is UNIMA 2008 (UPDATE 30 July 2009: the site is no longer available) in Perth, Australia; the next one is in China in 2012. Such events offer an extraordinary opportunity to meet other puppeteers from around the world; see performances from a range of national and international companies, and using a range of styles; partake in forums and classes held by well-known puppet makers and creators; and discuss a range of topics dear to the puppeteer’s heart.

If you are not a member, but are keen on becoming one, then check out your local branch. The UNIMA Int. website lists all the branches, as well as a lot of great puppetry links and information; UNIMA UK can be found here; and UNIMA USA here. UNIMA Australia is here. (Note that the prices of membership may differ, depending on your location and branch)
