How to make a puppet as seen on TV/film/stage
(If you’re looking for instructions on how to make puppets, please visit the other categories to the right - this article discusses puppets seen on TV/film/stage only. There are plenty of patterns and tutorials to be found on my site, just not anything that will help you make a puppet you’ve seen on TV/film/stage. If you’re looking for the stuff on building sets check out the article on set design. You will find more info and free patterns for puppet ’stages’ there.)
…or anything else for that matter. AKA ‘replica puppets’, AKA ‘how to make puppets as seen on broadway/TV/film on a budget’ or any other search term you come up with. AKA ‘download insert name of book here‘. (See full list of search terms at bottom of post)
F*k it, I’m not writing yet another article on this. Just read this, this, this and this. You’ll get the idea.
Just in case anyone was wondering: yes, it’s illegal to make replicas unless you have formal consent from the copyright owners; yes, if you can’t find any replicas or shops selling replicas, it’s probably because the copyright owner has not given permission to do so; yes, you should learn about copyrights (read that link and read your government’s copyright laws); no, free or bought puppet patterns won’t look like (or end up looking like if you modify them) the puppet you saw on TV/film/stage; yes, to get them to look like a professional made it you’re going to have to actually learn using books, classes or spend more than five minutes making puppets; yes, puppets are expensive to make; no, puppet makers won’t make you a replica if you pay them (at least, reputable ones won’t).
As for the books, if the book is not still copyrighted, you can’t download it for free. This includes any patterns from Project Puppet (while you can download their patterns, you can’t do it for free) or other sellers, or books normally only sold in book format like The Foam Book. These books/patterns take a lot of time to write, and no author would permit them to be available either for free or in a different format. Seriously, the Project Puppet.com patterns and The Foam Book (etc) are less than $30 to buy. You’ll be spending more on materials and labour than you will on the patterns/books themselves!
<sarcasm> No, I never get sick of fielding this question </sarcasm>
See, who needs to write a new article, when I’ve already done it several times over?
(PS, for regular readers, this is just my way of a catch-all: covering every possible puppet character/maker and hopefully I’ll never have to write another separate post on whatever character and whoever person again. Every time someone googles some character/builder, I’ll just add the name to this post and start a list. I’m as sick of writing it as you are of reading it)
