Puppets in Melbourne

More puppetry events for late 2009

Here’s an events dump for events in Australia and around the world for November 2009. Unfortunately I missed the Sept/Oct events dump, which is sad, because there were quite a few shows on in Melbourne that I could have mentioned. (Serves me right for ignoring my monthly reminder) For your reading pleasure, I’ve also listed all the events by state/location, and will probably keep that formatting for future event dumps.

International

UNIMA Int. has sent out their latest newsletter. In it they note:

  • The first meeting of the UNIMA Int executive committe since Perth (I’m guessing they mean since they UNIMA 2008 festival, which was held in Perth), occurred recently in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The event was successful in providing support for the creation of the first ever World Festival of Puppet Schools, which will take place in August-September 2010. Additionally a French encyclopedia of puppetry has been launched, and is available for 80 euros (UNIMA members, 60 euros).
  • The next council meeting will happen in Dordrecht, Holland, from 19-22 June 2010. It will occur on the 55th anniversary of UNIMA Holland’s creation, and the 25th anniversary of the International Poppentheaterfestival of the same town.
  • Tributes to three puppetry icons have been made at the recent (September) Charleville-Mézières puppetry festival. Margareta Niculescu, Henryk Jurkowski and Michael Meschke were acknowledged for their contributions to puppetry.

In other news…

  • For the first time in 25 years, London is playing host to a puppetry festival. More info can be found here.

NSW

  • The One Van Puppet Festival was not going to go ahead for early next year; but received funding for April 2010. However, at this stage, things are still unconfirmed, and I’m trying to track down more info - their site has not been updated with current details of the event

VIC

  • Asphyxia will be appearing at the Arts Centre in Feb 2010; more info to come. She recently toured Victoria in September and has a second printing of her book (with updated cover) for sale.
  • The Ilbijerri Theatre is presenting Sisters of Gelam at the Malthouse from 12-21 November 2009. It features the puppetry work of local artists Megan Cameron and Katrina Gaskell. More info and bookings here.
  • UNIMA Australia is holding its AGM on 19th December at 2pm. Members are invited to make nominations and vote for committee positions. The AGM will take place at Polyglot Puppet Theatre’s space in Cromwell Rd, South Yarra.
